It's location, right in the middle of sf.
The absolute lack of common facilities as bathrooms or showers (three showers for all the rooms). The towels weren't even clean (once they gave them to us: it took them 3 days!). We don't know about the carpet (we rather not look at it very much), but the window and its sill were among the dirtiest things we've ever seen.

No curtains at the window and the room looked out onto a brick wall. The whole hotel didn't smell clean. ie, the bedding and room smelt I dont feel it was washed, the pillow was flat and lumpy.

It was close to Union Square, but the area is disgusting.
The facilities were unclean, unsanitary, and unsafe. It's incredibly irresponsible of Booked.net to list this as a hotel. It's not a hotel. Many transient people live here. It's a functioning crack house. It wreaks of drugs, sweat, and sewage.

Better than sleeping on the street
I seen the hotel owner/employee? Once when I checked in. There is no front desk. No private showers or bathrooms, filthy showers (never seen any kind of cleaning person). The bed wasnt more than a cot, room smelled. I had to park 3 blocks away and walk through a gauntlet of homeless people going to and from the garage at all hours of the day and night.

The bathrooms were clean (most of the time).
The location is very dangerous (full of homeless people and prostitutes), the sheets walls and towels were stained, the entire building smelled of cigarette and marijuana smoke, the sink in our room was hanging by a thin layer of glue on the wall, the bathrooms are shared, the "curtains" to keep people from peeking in were trash bags cut in haf and taped to the window sill.

This "hotel" had a fair price. And we didn't see any bed bugs as some other reviewers said.
This hotel is stinky, the staff is never there, no information was given about the TV or wi-fi - we had to ask random guests at the hotel. The TV was missing the remote and the wi-fi was very slow (when it worked). There was only one filthy, stinky bathroom working on the whole 1st floor - without soap or paper. The walls were so thin that you could hear EVERYTHING going on. The location is pretty close to Union Square, but this part of the O'Farrell street is one of the worst parts in San Francisco: it's the meeting spot for lots of homeless people and we didn't feel safe.

I was a backpacker so it meets my expectation. I don't have any problem. Located in a strategic downtown SF. Shared bathroom? - no queue, no rush and its clean. Good for backpackers. If you want a presidential suit, then prepare more money.
'welcoming' dog perhaps and the management can do something about the smell in the aisle/corridor

Cost. It is low priced and close to Union Square.
Location - you have to go through a phalanx of street people congregating around the nearby missions and senior center and corner store as you near the hotel from Union Square along O'Farrell Street. Despite claims to the contrary, don't expect your money back should you wish or need to cut your planned stay short - they keep it all regardless of services rendered or not rendered. This should not be for customers who have already paid their entire bill up front in advance - if they leave a day or two early their money should be refunded. The Main Office needs to be manned earlier than 9 am for those checking out and the haphazard way of trying to contact the office upon first entering the hotel to register is scary as you are standing outside among homeless people nearby wondering if the locked gate is there to secure the hotel for customer safety, or was put there by the Housing Commission because they closed the place. Obviously one must lower expectations when accepting a place of such low price - however, room cleanliness standards, especially the sheets and pillow cases, and the one towel you get regardless of how long you are there and the one tiny sop bar dispensed is unacceptable. Considering the Sweden House is not the only hotel in the immediate area you would think City authorities would do something about the security of the streets a mere six blocks away from one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco.

It was cheap and close to Downtown.
This hostel is located in a very poor area of San Francisco. There is a lot of homeless people and people who are generally in a very bad state. It does not feel comfortable walking to the hostel after it gets dark.

Absolutely nothing apart from leaving the place!
In one of the roughest unsafe neighbourhoods of San Fran with homeless people injecting themselves right next to the entrance and street corners. Hotel, which I don't understand how it could be called that, stinks of weed and smoke although there are signs saying no smoking everywhere. The hotel has more full time residents than guests and resembles a crack or dos house more than a hotel. The rooms are dirty with broken windows and blinds and we didn't even venture to the shower room. We arrived at 11.30 pm, left at 9am. Supposed to stay 4 nights but only managed one. My girlfriend had a lovely souvenir from the place though 5 bed bug bites! Worst accommodation experience of both our lives. Do not stay !
